Predicting hotspots for invasive species introduction in Europe

چکیده

Abstract Plant pest invasions cost billions of Euros each year in Europe. Prediction likely places introduction could greatly help focus efforts on prevention and control thus reduce societal costs invasions. Here, we test whether generic data-driven risk maps introduction, valid for multiple species produced by machine learning methods, supplement the costly species-specific analyses currently conducted governmental agencies. An elastic-net algorithm was trained a dataset covering 243 invasive to map new introductions Europe as function climate, soils, water, anthropogenic factors. Results revealed that BeNeLux states, Northern Italy, Balkans, United Kingdom, areas around container ports such Antwerp, London, Rijeka, Saint Petersburg were at higher introductions. Our analysis shows can produce hotspot with high predictive accuracy, but systematically collected data species’ presences absences are required further validate improve these maps.

Predicting distributions of invasive species

This chapter aims to inform a practitioner about current methods for predicting potential distributions of invasive species. It mostly addresses single species models, covering the conceptual bases, touching on mechanistic models, and then focusing on methods using species distribution records and environmental data to predict distributions. The commentary in this last section is oriented towar...

Introduction pathways and establishment rates of invasive aquatic species in Europe

Species invasion is one of the leading mechanisms of global environmental change, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. We used the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Database of Invasive Aquatic Species to study invasion rates and to analyze invasion pathways within Europe. Of the 123 aquatic species introduced into six contrasting European countries, the average percentage established is 63...

Predicting Hotspots for Influenza Virus Reassortment

The 1957 and 1968 influenza pandemics, each of which killed ≈1 million persons, arose through reassortment events. Influenza virus in humans and domestic animals could reassort and cause another pandemic. To identify geographic areas where agricultural production systems are conducive to reassortment, we fitted multivariate regression models to surveillance data on influenza A virus subtype H5N...

Amassing Efforts against Alien Invasive Species in Europe

August 2006 | Volume 4 | Issue 8 | e279 Almost daily, we can read newspaper articles voicing concerns about alien species and their impacts on native biodiversity, economic resources, and human health. Alien or non-native species introductions by humans rank as one of the two top factors (after habitat loss) leading to declines in biological diversity [1]. Their synergistic effects with changes...
